One of the staples of the Jack In The Box menu is put to the test.
How did the sirloin steak melt taste? Was there too much steak? Not enough? Can you guess?
I am a recent convert to Jack In The Box, and I am happy about that fact. They have an incredibly extensive menu, almost too large if you can believe it. After spending a while staring at the dizzying array of choices, one in particular stood out: the Sirloin Steak Melt.
I love grilled cheeses, so it should not be much of a surprise that I was enchanted by the concept of a grilled cheese that included sirloin steak in it. Not to mention the fact that it is prepared and delivered not on a bun, but betwixt two slices of toasted sourdough. As I always say: the best grilled cheeses are on sourdough.1 The sourdough was also baked to the most perfect of crisps. Suffice to say the sourdough “bun” was absolutely incredible.
Nestled between these round slices of perfection was mayonnaise, grilled2 onions, and the sirloin steak strips. Neat and simple. The sirloin steak strips were wonderful. They were tender and juicy, almost supple. The onions provided just the right amount of crunch, although I do not really like onions but I was trying something new.
The major issue with this sandwich was the overuse of mayonnaise. It really felt extreme, and it was neither tasteful nor tasty. It was as if you walked into a beautifully decorated mansion, with impeccable furnishings and sense of style, but the entire household was a foot deep in water.
However, overall it was very good. What I loved about this, as compared to traditional fast food fare is that it was not a burger with a patty. The looseness of the sirloin strips was almost comforting. It was as if it was whispering softly to me “I was not made thousands of miles away”, even though it surely was. This is not to in any way imply that the Sirloin Steak Melt has only a false aura of quality, it is in fact an excellent choice.
1 This is false. The best grilled cheeses are on white bread, but I was making a point and sourdough is an extremely close second — if done correctly.
2 I’m not really sure if they were grilled, to be honest with you.
